Our leather comes from Tuscany. Here the art of leather tanning can be traced back to the middle ages, where tanners and craftsmen have existed since the 14th century. We use vegetable-tanned leather. From hides to distressed smelling leather, Stabole bags are synonymous with the tie existing between the object and its producer.
Horse leather is only obtained from the dorsal/back side of the horse. To obtain this particular quality of skin, besides the traditional process still followed today, a further touch is needed.
This begins with the process of fleshing which goes on till the right thickness is obtained; then the skins are spread and softened using an ancient tand-tool called ‘palmella’ and finally the skins are greased and polished using glass and stone hand-tools.
